This time around it’s all snippets from a comic I am working on. I am painfully aware that I don’t actually have much in the way of proper experience in drawing sequential work (or to be more accurate I have drawn a meagre 24 pages to date). In order to get a bit more practice in before I start work on an ongoing series this fall (more on that later), I’m taking a leaf out of the book of Becky Cloonan and drawing a mini-comic with a view to having it available to buy for those of you attending Thought Bubble this November.
You will be able to see that all my favorite tropes are covered - beards, boats, skeletons, the sea and it’s mysteries - and there will no doubt be more snippets posted between now and November.
Senior Thesis film Ricerca (2015)- film stills
Started animation this summer! A couple film stills.
My professor told me about a conversation he had with John Hench, VP of Disney and the main guy who ran Disney Parks
He said something along the lines of this: Do you know why people love Disneyland? It is because there they get an affirmation of life. They get a sense they are alive there, witnessing how beautiful and wonderful life can be.
If I can give people this sense of affirmation every day for the rest of my life through my work I could die happy.
I forget that this art is magic to people, that animation is boundless on its effect on audiences, that it’s something that stays with them for the rest of their lives. When I saw the outreach kids fawn over Tom Sito’s Beauty and the Beast drawings, looking like they were going to cry, that hit me hard. These drawings MEAN a lot to people, these characters, these personalities, exemplify this moment in their lifetime that was precious to them.
I am so lucky to get to do what I get to do, and so lucky to have figured that out so early in my life.
